Plain-English summary. By using NoBo you agree: only post videos you recorded yourself inside the app, don't try to fake authenticity, don't be a jerk to other users. We may remove content that breaks these rules. Your data is governed by the [Privacy Policy](privacy_policy_en.md).

1. What NoBo is

NoBo is a video-sharing app whose entire purpose is provable authenticity. Every public-feed video begins in NoBo's in-app camera; existing files cannot be imported into the public feed. A recording can be kept privately in NoBo's Camera Roll and published later. NoBo verifies uploads through prevention: controlled native-camera capture, device-genuineness checks, and structural and freshness checks. NoBo does not perform behavioral or motion surveillance; see Section 7.

These Terms govern your use of NoBo (the mobile app, our website, and any related services).

2. Who can use NoBo

By posting on NoBo, you agree:

  1. You recorded the video yourself, inside the NoBo app, on your own iPhone.
  2. You did not modify, re-encode, or otherwise tamper with the video before posting.
  3. You did not record a screen showing pre-existing or AI-generated content.
  4. You did not use jailbroken/tampered devices, modified apps, or other techniques to bypass NoBo's capture and device-verification checks.

NoBo enforces authenticity primarily through prevention (native-camera-only capture + device verification) and may, occasionally, hold a clearly non-native file for manual review or remove content we reasonably believe was not produced inside the app. Our absolute rule: if a real recording is incorrectly flagged, the video goes to a human review queue, not the trash. You have the right to contest any moderation decision by emailing oliverparelius@protonmail.com.

5. Content you post

You retain ownership of every video you post on NoBo.

You grant NoBo a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, display, and serve your content only inside the NoBo platform — no resale, no redistribution to third parties. You can delete any video at any time, which terminates that license for that video.

You are solely responsible for the content you post. By posting, you confirm that you have the right to share it and that it follows our Community Guidelines (Section 5A below).

NoBo is the platform of real life. We do not censor opinions, language, ideas, or uncomfortable truths. The list of content that is not allowed is intentionally short, and exists for one of three reasons: it harms real people, it is illegal, or it violates the rules of the platforms we distribute through (Apple App Store, Google Play). These rules apply to everyone equally.

5A. Community Guidelines

The following content is not allowed on NoBo. This list is short and specific on purpose. If a rule is not on this list, the content is allowed.

Zero-tolerance categories (instant permanent ban, no strikes)

  1. Sexual content involving minors (CSAM). Any depiction of a person who is, or appears to be, under 18 in a sexual context. NoBo restricts access, preserves evidence, and reports confirmed material to the appropriate authority when required by applicable law.
  2. Non-consensual intimate imagery. Sharing nude, sexual, or intimate images or videos of a person without their consent, including content originally shared in confidence ("revenge porn"). Reported to law enforcement where required.
  3. Direct, credible threats of violence against an identifiable person, group, or location.
  4. Doxxing. Sharing a person's home address, phone number, government ID, financial account details, employer, school, or other private identifying information without their consent.
  5. Content that promotes, plans, or facilitates real-world terrorism, mass violence, or human trafficking (including sex trafficking, forced labor, and the smuggling of persons).

Removal + strike categories (5-stage strike system in Section 5B)

  1. Sexual content and nudity. NoBo is not an adult platform. The following are not allowed:

This rule exists because:

What is allowed in this area: Talking openly about sexuality, relationships, dating, sexual health, and adult topics. Body-positive content that is not sexually framed (e.g., a gym video, a beach video, a recovery-from-surgery video). Discussion of pornography as a topic. Sex education and harm reduction. The line is explicit visual content vs. discussion — discussion is fine, explicit visuals are not.

  1. Harassment and targeted abuse. Sustained personal attacks on a specific person, coordinated pile-ons, or content designed to intimidate, silence, or scare a specific person. Disagreement, criticism, and strong reactions are not harassment.
  1. Hate speech that calls for harm against people. Content that targets people based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, immigration status, disability, or age, and explicitly calls for violence, physical harm, or discrimination against them.

What is allowed in this area: Criticism of religions, ideologies, political movements, organizations, governments, and beliefs. Disagreement with cultural practices. Strong opinions about ideas. Comedy and satire about groups. The line is criticism of ideas vs. calls for harm against people — the first is allowed, the second is not.

  1. Illegal activity under the laws of Norway (where NoBo is operated) or the country you live in. This includes (non-exhaustive): the sale of illegal drugs or weapons, the planning of crimes against persons or property, content that infringes copyright, and content that violates Norwegian or EU privacy law.
  1. Spam, malware, phishing, scams. Any attempt to defraud, deceive, or harm other users or the platform, including (non-exhaustive): repeated identical posts, links to malware, fake giveaways, financial scams, and impersonation-for-fraud.
  1. Impersonation. Pretending to be a specific real person, brand, or organization in a way that could mislead other users. Clearly labeled parody and commentary accounts are allowed.
  1. Faked authenticity. Any attempt to bypass NoBo's capture and device-verification checks — recording on jailbroken/tampered devices, using a modified app, recording a screen showing pre-existing or AI-generated content, or any other technique designed to make a recording appear authentic when it is not. This is covered in detail in Section 3.

What IS allowed (transparency on the limits of our rules)

We are explicit about what is allowed because most platforms hide it, and the lack of clarity is what users hate. The following are welcome on NoBo and will not be removed under any of the categories above:

The bar is not "is this comfortable?" The bar is "does this fall under one of the specific prohibited categories in 5A?" If it does not, the content stays up.

5B. How moderation works

Reporting

Every video has a Report button accessible from the video's menu. You can report a video in these categories:

Reports are anonymous to the uploader. You can also block any user from any profile or video, which makes you and them invisible to each other on the platform.

Review

Reports are reviewed by a human (currently Oliver Parelius). Urgent reports page the operator immediately. Target response times:

To protect the platform while reviews are pending, a video that receives 5 or more reports within 1 hour is automatically hidden from the main feed (still visible to the uploader) until a human has reviewed it.

5-stage strike system

For the removal + strike categories in Section 5A (items 6–12), strikes accumulate per account:

  1. Strike 1: Warning. No posting restrictions. You receive a notice explaining which rule was broken and why the content was removed.
  2. Strike 2: 24-hour posting cooldown. You cannot post new videos for 24 hours. You can still browse and interact.
  3. Strike 3: 7-day posting cooldown. You cannot post new videos for 7 days.
  4. Strike 4: 30-day posting cooldown. You cannot post new videos for 30 days.
  5. Strike 5: Permanent account ban. Your account is closed permanently.

Strikes do not expire automatically. You may request a strike review after 12 months of clean activity.

For the zero-tolerance categories in Section 5A (items 1–5), the strike system does not apply. The account is permanently banned on the first confirmed violation, and where required by law the matter is referred to the relevant authorities.

Contesting a moderation decision

Any moderation action can be contested by emailing oliverparelius@protonmail.com with the subject "Moderation appeal" and a link or description of the affected content. We aim to respond within 7 days. If we made a mistake, the content is restored and any associated strike is removed.

New-account protection

To protect the platform from drive-by abuse, content from accounts that are less than 7 days old or that have fewer than 10 videos posted is shown only to your followers — not in the main feed or in discovery surfaces. Once your account is established, your content reaches the full platform.

This protection applies equally to all new accounts. It is not a quality judgment about you or your content; it is a window during which we can build a baseline for your account before exposing your content to a mass audience.

Banned accounts and re-registration

Permanently banned accounts cannot create new accounts on the same device. We use device-level signals (consistent with Section 3 and the [Privacy Policy](privacy_policy_en.md)) to detect re-registration attempts. Attempting to evade a ban is itself grounds for permanent ban of the new account.

5C. Copyright and DMCA

NoBo respects intellectual property rights and expects its users to do the same. Because every video on NoBo must be recorded by you, inside the app (Section 3), copyright infringement should be rare — you can only post what you yourself filmed. But if you believe content on NoBo infringes your copyright, you can ask us to remove it, and we will act on valid notices.

NoBo complies with the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and with equivalent notice-and-takedown obligations under EU law (including the EU Digital Services Act). We maintain a repeat-infringer policy: accounts that are the subject of repeated valid copyright complaints will be terminated.

Filing a copyright takedown notice

If you are a copyright owner (or authorized to act for one) and believe your work has been copied onto NoBo in a way that constitutes infringement, send a written notice to our Designated Agent (below) that includes all of the following:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed.
  3. Identification of the material you claim is infringing, with enough detail for us to locate it (e.g. the username and a link to or description of the specific video).
  4. Your contact information (name, address, telephone number, and email).
  5. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on its behalf.

On receiving a valid notice, we will remove or disable access to the material and make a good-faith effort to notify the user who posted it. Incomplete notices may delay our response.

Counter-notification

If your content was removed and you believe it was a mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notification to the Designated Agent that includes: your signature; identification of the removed material and where it appeared; a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed by mistake or misidentification; and your name, address, and telephone number, plus consent to the jurisdiction of the appropriate court. If we receive a valid counter-notification, we may restore the material in 10–14 business days unless the original complainant notifies us they have filed a court action.

7. Authenticity verification + your data

NoBo proves authenticity through prevention: controlled native-camera capture, device-genuineness checks (Apple App Attest on iOS and Play Integrity on Android when enabled), structural checks, and freshness checks, as documented in the [Privacy Policy](privacy_policy_en.md). NoBo does not collect behavioral motion, tap, swipe, or per-account behavioral-profile data, and the behavioral data previously collected was permanently deleted. The accelerometer is read locally only for recording orientation and shake-to-report; those readings are never stored or sent. By using NoBo you acknowledge that:

8. Liability

NoBo is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. We make no guarantee that the service will be available 24/7, that your videos will be preserved indefinitely, or that our prevention measures will catch every fake. We will, however, do our best — see [docs/lessons.md](lessons.md) for our public engineering log.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, NoBo's total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of the service is limited to the greater of:

9. Termination

You can stop using NoBo and delete your account at any time. We can suspend or terminate your account if you break these Terms. We'll do our best to give you notice unless an immediate suspension is necessary (e.g. an active security incident).

10. Changes to these Terms

If we change these Terms in a way that materially affects your rights or obligations, we'll notify you in-app on next launch and ask you to accept the new version before continuing. You can always view the current version at [docs/terms_of_service_en.md](terms_of_service_en.md).

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Norway. If you live in the EU/EEA, you also have rights under EU consumer law that these Terms cannot override.
